Funeral services for Carl Houg, Sr. were held Thursday, May 4, 2000, 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Monona, Iowa. Rev. Glenn Leaf and Rev. Gene Kramer officiated. Organist was Mrs. Judy Walter. Providing special music were Don Sabbann, Bob Sabbann, and Barbara and Meagan Houg. Honorary pallbearers were Lori Farley, Karla St. John, Holly Nuehring, Brenda Houg, Barbara Houg, Liz Moon, Deb McKee, Bridget Houg, Virginia Houg, and Luiese Houg. Pallbearers were Wade Houg, Scott Houg, Mark Farley, Steve St. John, Eric Houg, Mitch McKee, Chris Houg, Barry Houg, and Randy Moon. Burial was in St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery, Monona, Iowa. Schultz Funeral Home of Monona, was in charge of services.

Carl Orlando Houg was born April 28, 1913 to Chris and Julia (Thompson) Houg in Highland Township, Clayton County, Iowa. He was baptized in Highland Township. Two years later they moved to a farm west of Farmersburg. He attended school in Wagner Township, Farmersburg, Iowa.

He was united in marriage to Mardella Sabbann on May 26, 1936 at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Monona, Iowa. They were blessed with three children. Carl and Mardella farmed west of Farmersburg for five years. They then purchased a farm east of Monona. In 1971 they moved to Monona. Carl was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church. Carl was a dedicated farmer. After leaving the farm he did trucking. When he retired he did woodworking. He made furniture for his children and grandchildren. Carl enjoyed fishing and having his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren around. Carl died Monday, May 1, 2000 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents; 2 sisters, Selma Moon and Lillian Tayek; 3 brothers, Tylman Houg, Millard Houg and Vernon Houg, and 1 grandson, Jeff Houg.

He is survived by his wife, Mardella; a daughter, Marilyn (Mark) Nuehring of Marion, Iowa; 2 sons, Carl W.(Evelyn) Houg of Peoria, Arizona, and Gary (Marlene) Houg of Waukon, Iowa; 10 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters, Myrtle Glesne of Omaha, Nebraska, and Julliette Olson of Volga, Iowa, in addition to many other relatives and friends.
