Francis "Bud" Meehan

Family and friends mourn the loss of Francis “Bud” Meehan. Bud passed away peacefully at home in the presence of his family after a long illness December 25, 2010. He was 84 years old.
Bud is survived by his wife of 54 years, Annie; children, Julie (Pattison, husband Scott and children Kate and Eric), Karen (Bondy, husband Greg and children Jade and Julie), Jeff, and Kevin (wife Heather); sister-in-law, Rose Boardman; brother-in-law, Mike Garlow (wife Mary); and numerous nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his siblings, Marge, Bernice, Kathryn, Lloyd and Howard, and nephews, Mike Daman, Bob Wright, Dick Wright, and Doug Boardman.
Bud was born to the late Richard and Stella Meehan in Clayton County May 28, 1926. He was the youngest of six children and was raised on a farm on the banks of the Mississippi river. Bud learned to waltz early on from Mrs. Corrigan, the mother of 11 boys from the neighboring farm. Bud continued to enjoy dancing with the love of his life all of his days.
Bud worked for AT&T after high school, repairing downed phone lines throughout the Midwest. A frigid winter as a lineman in Fargo, ND prompted Bud to make a career change.
Bud then proudly served his country for 28 years in the military, enlisting in the U.S. Army during World War II. Following that, he joined the U.S. Air Force where he attained the rank of Senior Master Sergeant. He completed tours of duties in both the Korean War and the Vietnam War. While in Vietnam, he was awarded the Bronze Star medal for meritorious service. Bud was stationed at dozens of bases throughout the United States, as well as abroad. He and his family have happy memories of welcoming foreign military students into their home and being stationed in Okinawa.
Bud was proud of his Irish heritage and loved to seek out Irish pubs to sing “Danny Boy”. His quick smile and easy laugh made fast friends with anyone he met. His self-deprecating humor and non-judgmental demeanor put everyone in his presence at ease. Simply, Bud always found something he liked in everyone, which was then reciprocated in kind. He also was very proud of his grandchildren and their many accomplishments.
He and his family retired to Austin, TX in 1976, where they began their three decade love affair with Lake Travis. After fun filled days of pulling skiers, the family enjoyed beautiful sunsets and moon rises while anchored in coves on the lake. He was particularly proud of being asked to open a floodgate during the 2007 flood.
Bud began 20 years of volunteering, including working in the Caritas food kitchen, St. Michaels Thrift Store and the Austin Steam Train. In 2005, Bud was honored with both the KVUE Five Who Care award and the RSVP Volunteer of the Year award. In Bud’s words, he was most proud of his volunteer work.
A rosary will be recited at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, December 29 at Emmaus Catholic Church in Lakeway, TX, of which Bud was an active member. A memorial mass will be held immediately after at 10 a.m.
