MICHAEL BENTE

Funeral services for Michael Bente were held from the Oelke funeral home at 1:30 o’clock Mon day afternoon to the Peace Evangelical and Reformed church at two o’clock, the Rev. Paul Kitterer officiating. Burial was in the East Side cemetery.

Mr. Bente died at his home in Elkader at one o’clock Friday afternoon, Dec. 26, following a year’s illness, at the age of 67 years, nine months and one day.

Michael Bente was born in Cox Creek township Mar. 25, 1880 the son of William and Margaret Kress Bente. He spent his entire life in and around Elkader. He received his education in the rural schools of the community.

On Jan. 15, 1913, at National, he was married to Miss Rose Dettman. They started housekeeping on a farm in Cox Creek township, where they lived until 1923, when they moved to Elkader where Mr. Bente entered the implement business and built the building now occupied by the Donion Chevrolet company. After selling the business to Mr. Donlon in 1937, they moved back to the farm. Again in 1944 they returned to Elkader, which has since been their home.

He was baptized and confirmed in the Peace Evangelical and Reformed church, of which he was a member.

He is survived by his wife and three sons, Leighton and Duane of Elkader and Harold of Independence, Kan.,; and three brothers and four sisters, Louis, George, and Frank Bente all of Elkader, Mrs. Mary Archer of Jacksonville, Fla., Mrs. Anna Meese of Littleport, Mrs. Katherine Englert and Mrs. Elizabeth Hesner, both of Chicago, Ill. Also three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Henry and William, and one sister, Mrs. Ida Miller of Chicago.

Pallbearers were Fred Bente, Harry Bente, Irving Bente, Elmer Bente, Oscar Meese, and Ralph Bente.

Out of town relatives attending the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. John Dettman and Lorin, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Mueller and Geraldine, Mr. and Mrs. Vern Marting and Fern, Mrs. Elvina Dettman, Mrs. Alvin Dettman, Jean, Joyce and Julius, and Mr. and Mrs. Victor Meyer, Monona; Mr. and Mrs. Myron Dettman, Luana; Mr. and Mrs. Ed Dettman and Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Lenth, McGregor; Mr. and Mrs. August Hempeler, Jeanette and Joan, Garnavillo; the Rev. and Mrs. Arnold Schlueter and David, Moville; Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Bierbaum and Jon, Strawberry Point; Mrs. Orville Zittergruen and Mr. and Mrs. George Kishman, Farmersburg; Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Pfaltzgraff and Irving Bente, Dumont; Mr. and Mrs. Art Jensen and Ruth, Osage; Mrs. Margaret Muller, Elkport; Mr.. and Mrs. Merritt Anderson and Wilma, Mederville; Mr. and Mrs. Harry Schulte, West Uinion; Mr. and Mrs. Laurence Wilke, Fayette; and Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Meese, Littleport.
