Barbara, I found that William Henry Yates, passed away Friday evening, July 9, 1926, at his home in Spencer, Iowa. He was born November 24, 1844 in Manley, New York. He tried enlisting with the troops five times, during the Civil War before he was finally accepted. He served with Co.E, 40th Wisconsin Infantry for ninety days.
On December 22, 1869, he was united in marriage to Mary Jane Ostrander, daughter of Wm. and Phebe Ostrander of Barton, Wisconsin. Mary Jane was born April 21, 1851 at Menonimee Falls, Wisconsin. In 1872 they established themselves on a homestead six miles southwest of Spencer, Iowa. Mr. Yates was a local railroad contractor.
To this union were born five children. Maud Myrtle died Aug. 29, 1884, Milo Arthur in Aug 10,1886, Mildred (Mrs. W.H.Duffy), T.E.Yates and Mrs. D.E.Becket. Mrs. Yates died, Sunday, July 28, 1946 in Spencer.
