Funeral Was Held Friday Afternoon At Congregational Church

Samuel James Stokes was born at Chambersburg, Pa., Dec. 23, 1844, being a little over seventy-one years of age at the time of his death which occurred last Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 19th, 1915. while he was yet young his parents moved to Stephenson county, Ill., where he grew to manhood. When he was about twenty-one years of age, in 1864, he enlisted in company F. Twenty-second Illinois Light Artillery in which he served till the close of the war.

He was married to Mary E. Iler(?) at Freeport, Ill, Sept. 24, 1870, and they moved soon after to Linn county, Iowa, where he spent ten years in farming. They moved to Sanborn in 1882, where he engaged in the farm implement business for about ten years. He then ran an elevator in Dickens for about twelve years, living most of the time in Spencer. After this they lived for five years at Freeport, Ill., returning to Spencer in 1912, where he has since resided till the time of his death. His health had been gradually failing until some three weeks ago when he took to his bed.

The funeral was held at the Congregational church last Friday afternoon conducted by Rev. J.O. Thrush the pastor. The impressive Masonic burial service was conducted by Prof. A.H. Avery acting as Master. A large concourse of friends attended the funeral and interment was made at Riverside. Mr. Stokes was an enthusiastic Mason and bore the marks of service for his country.

The family desire to express through the News their hearty appreciation of the sympathy and many kindnesses shown them in their bereavement.
