John J. Skalitsky 1867-1929

John J. Skalitzky, well known and esteemed resident of Spencer and Clay County for the past thirty-four years, died at his home, 716 East Fourth street, Spencer. Thursday morning, February 28, 1029. Death which came at 1:15 o'clock was caused from heart trouble and complications. At the time of his death, he was sixty-one years, two months and ten days old.
Mr. Skalitzky had been in failing health for the. past month, growing gradually worse until the previous Saturday when his condition became critical.
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Grace Methodist Episcopal church conducted by Dr. Herbert Clegg, pastor of the church. Mrs. E. Joy Roberts sang the solo, "Face to Face," while the male quartet composed of L.R. Bellows, Kon Kail, A.H. Laton and J.W. Couch sang two selections accompanied by Mrs. C.D. Eckerman at the piano.
Pallbearers were Lewis Scharnberg, Otto Thiel, S. A. Torbert, W. F. Jolllffe, John Larsen and Otto Jacobson.
Interment was made in Riverside cemetery.
John J, Skalitzky was born December is, 1867, in Bohemia, now Czecho-Slovakia. When a youth of eighteen years, like so many others of the ambitious young men of Bohemia, he came to America to make his home, locating in Freeport. Illinois. He remained in Freeport until the year 1891 when he moved to Linn County, Iowa.
On December 25. 1894, he was united in marriage to Miss Minty Houts. in March 18115 Mr. and Mrs. Skalitzky moved to a farm which he had purchased, two miles north of Everly, and here they made their home for the following twenty-three years. In 1918 they left the farm and made their home, in Everly, and after about eighteen months, they moved to Spencer where they had made their home since.
Mr. Skalitzky was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church and loyally supported it by his means and his presence, he was devoted to his home and family and found unbounded satisfaction In their wellbeing. He was a man of industry and of unquestioned integrity. He was an ardent lover of his adopted country and at the same time retained those qualities of mind and heart which are characteristic of the best of his native land. By diligence and careful foresight, he established a home of comforts and gave his children the opportunity of a food start in life.
Besides his wife he leaves to mourn his death five children: to Raymond Skalitzky oŁ Los Angeles, California, LeRoy Skalitzky of Kansas City, Missouri, Francis Skalitzky of Monrovia. California, -Mrs. William Morris of Fostoria, and Miss Buelah Skalitzky of Sioux Falls. South Dakota. One baby died in infancy. There is also one brother, Richard Skalitzky of Freeport, Illinois, one sister. Mrs. Amelia Lenz, of Freeport, Illinois and one half-sister, Rose Tobetka of Czecho Slovakia
There are also many other relatives in this country and in Europe.
The membership of the Methodist Episcopal church and the entire community are sympathetic with the family in the hour of their great sorrow
Among those in attendance at the funeral services from out town were LeRoy Skalitzky of Kansas City, Missouri. Miss Buelah Skalitzky of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Richard Skalitzky of Freeport, Illinois, Mrs. Amelia Lenz and Leo Lenz, also of Freeport, Rev. W.C. Houts of Nebraska City, Nebraska, John Houts of Alburnett, Iowa, Mr. and Mrs. James Houts of Parkersburg, Iowa, and Walter Houts of Center Point, Iowa. The attendance at the funeral was very large attesting the high esteem in which Mr. Skalitzky was held.
