Frederick C. Jurgens, resident of Everly and vicinity for more then twenty years, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. L.C.Scharnberg, 453 East Fourth street, Spencer, Saturday morning, December 9, 1928, following an illness of on week. Death was caused from old age and complications.
Mr. Jurgens had been in falling health for more than a month. He came to see his daughter about week prior to his death, and he grew gradually weaker each day. He was conscious to the end, how over, his death coming at 9:45 o'clock while sitting in a chair. Mr. Scharnberg was with him at the time of his death.
Funeral services were held at the chapel of the Cobb Funeral Home at two o'clock Tuesday afternoon with the Rev. J.L,. Zeitsinger, pastor of the Lutheran church of Everly, officiating.
Pall bearers were Henry Schmidt, J.W. Flick, Chas. Scharnberg, Fred Boetel and John Rolfe, all of Everly, and C.J. Koep of Spencer.
Burial was made in the Lone Tree cemetery of Everly.
Frederick Christopher Jurgens, was born in Schleswig, Holstein, Germany, January 11, 1843, being at the time of his death 85 years, 11 months and 18 days of age. He came to the United States when he was twenty-four years of age, locating at Davenport, Iowa, where he remained until his marriage to Miss Anna Margaretta Kreitzfeldt in February 1865. They resided at Davenport for several years and later removed to Benton county, Iowa,
Mr. Jurgens engaging in agricultural pursuits. They later farmed in Cherokee and O'Brien counties and then moved to a farm six miles south of Everly. Later they moved to Missouri and Oklahoma where they lived for several years, returning again to Clay county in 1910. Their first home was located one mile north and one mile east of Everly, and from there they moved to a farm eight miles northwest of Everly where they had since made their home with their two sons, Gus and Will Jurgens.
Early in life Mr. Jurgens was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church.
He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. L.C. Scharnberg of Spencer and Mrs. Bertha Mangels of Hartley, and six sons, John Jurgens of Bingham Lake, Minnesota, Gus and Will Jurgens of Everly, Ed Jurgens of Bennett, Iowa, Richard Jurgens of Adrian, Minnesota, and Fred Jurgens of Ogden, Utah.
One daughter, Mrs. Emma Alfriet, preceded her father in death.
All of the children were present for the funeral services except the one son from Utah. Mr. Jurgens is also survived by one brother, Henry Jurgens of Chicago, who was also present for the funeral rites, nineteen grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren, and other relatives and friends.
Among those from out of town attending the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Richard Jurgens and son of Adrian, Minnesota, Mr. and Mrs. John Jurgens of Bingham Lake, Ed Jurgens of Bennett, Iowa, and Mrs. Mangels and family of Hartley.
Mr. Jurgens always enjoyed good health, and was never ill a day during his life. He was determined in spirit and was unfaltering in enterprise. He carefully noted and utilized his opportunities, making each moment count and his example of Industry and perseverance is one well worthy of emulation
