Arlena Shouse Dies Suddenly

Cordelia Arlena Shouse was born December 18, 1908 at Monroe City, Indiana, to Ernest and Sophie Shouse. She resided near Peterson for 34 years, then came to Spencer 17 years ago.

Miss Shouse was affectionately known to her many friends as Arlena. She was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church at the age of fourteen in Peterson, Iowa. She was a member of the Spencer Rebekah Lodge; Order of the Eastern Star; White Shrine and Ladies Auxiliary of the Patriands Militant of Storm Lake. Arlena was past president of Gilliand Auxiliary No. 21. She was affiliated with the “Ladies of the Decoration” of Iowa and in July 1955 was awarded this degree of Chivalry at Clear Lake, Iowa. Such a high honor bestowed only for meritorious work in life.

On July 26, 1964 Miss Shouse had gone to Sioux City with her sister, Mrs. Fred Hyndman, and her niece Kathleen Hyndman, to consult with a doctor. Before reaching the doctors (sic) office she suffered a severe and fatal heart attack at the age of 55 years, 7 months and 10 days.

Survivors include one sister, Mrs. Fred (Genevieve) Hyndman of Everly; one brother, Arthur Shous (sic) of Linn Grove. Seven nieces and nephews, namely, David Hyndman, Airman 2/0 of A. F. B. Topeka, Kansas, Kathleen Hyndman, of Everly; Roger and Wayne Shouse of Los Angeles, Calif., Carolyn Chloe, Arla Marie, and James Ernest Shouse, of Linn Grove. Also other relatives and a host of friends.

Funeral services were held Friday, July 31, 1964 at 2 P. M. at the Warner Chapel, Spencer, Iowa, with Dr. Howard H. Palmer officiating.Pall bearers were: L. W. Green, LeRoy Brigham, Peter Snyderwaard, Herbert Koch, Clarence Mayhew and Ed Sorbe.
Mrs. Ray Ihry and Mrs. Gale Birdall sang “In the Garden” and “Beautiful Isle of Somewhere”. Organist was Miss Kathleen Hyndman.
Interment in Oakland Cemetery at Peterson under the direction of the Warner Funeral Home Spencer.
