Funeral rites for Simon A. French, resident of Clay county for more than thirty-five years, who died last Tuesday evening at his home in Summit, South Dakota, were held at the Congregational church in Peterson last Saturday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. Camerman, pastor of the church. The church was filled with relatives and friends. A quartet composed of Mrs. Bert Anderson, Clarice Berg, Harry Adams and George Anderson sang "Looking This Way," "Face to Face," "In That City Four Square," and "Safe in the Arms of Jesus." They were accompanied by Mrs. Roy A. Jarnagin at the piano.
About five weeks ago, Mr. French suffered a paralytic stroke, and all that loving hands and care could do for him during his illness, was done to no avail. The body was brought from Summit to Peterson for the burial.
Simon Arthur French was born in Onslow, Iowa, Jones county, November 5, 1857. He died on his birthday at the age of 72 years. Mr. French was the son of Aaron French and moved with his parents to Clay county, Iowa, where they located on a farm seven miles north of Peterson.
He was united in marriage to Elnora Idalia Warren of Peterson, Iowa, October 12, 1885. To this union seven children were born, one daughter passing away in infancy. About fifteen years ago Mr. and Mrs. French moved to Summit, South Dakota, to make their home.
Mr. French leaves to mourn their loss, his wife, Elnora, and six children, Edgar and Elvin French of Downs, Illinois, Mrs. Walter Struve of Linn Grove, Mrs. Albert Struve of Peterson, Mrs. Clarence Glawe of Arlington, South Dakota, ten grandchildren, two sisters and one brother, Mrs. Rose Stanton of Storm Lake and Mrs. Lizzie Orr of Onslow, Iowa, and William French of Mountain Lake, Minnesota, other relatives and a large number of friends.
Those attending the funeral from a distance were the deceased man's wife and son, Ross, of Summit, South Dakota, Mrs. Earsel Barnet of Ware, Iowa, Mr. and Mrs. Henry French, Mr. and Mrs. Louis French and Ted French of Mountain Lake, Minnesota, Will and Ruby Chesley of Estherville, Iowa.
Burial was made in Oakland cemetery at Peterson. The pall bearers were old friends of the deceased, William Haberman, William Struve, John Roberts, M.C. Remington, A. DeWitt and Elmer Lane.
