Cornell P. Phelps Dead
Tuesday afternoon Cornell P. Phelps died at his home on East 3rd street after but a short illness. The immediate cause of his death was heart failure. His son, George, was helping his father to a chair when he gave a gasp, and died in just a moment.
Mr. Phelps was born near Cortland, New York, May 15, 1830. He moved to Hampton, Iowa, in 1867 and then came to Clay county in 1882 and settled on a farm near where the town of Everly now is. He lived there until 1901 when he came to Spencer. He was married to Miss Emily Tuthill at Kelloggsville, New York, on Jan. 10, 1855.
Mr. Phelps was a man who always had the respect of those who knew him. He was a good husband and father and a splendid neighbor. He was a member of the Masonic lodge, but of late years had not attended on account of his age. His life was an active one, and he had seen his share of the troubles of the earlier settlers. He leaves to mourn his loss his wife and one son, George.
The funeral will be held at the home Friday at one o'clock. The Everly lodge of the Masons will ahve charge of the services at the cemetery. The funeral sermon will be preached by Rev. Day.
