DEATH OF J.B. WALTERS

Served in Fourth Iowa Cavalry 1861-65--Homesteaded in Meadow Township in 1871

John B. Walters, whose serious illness was spoken of in last week's Herald, died at his home on North Grove street, Monday evening at 11 o'clock. He had been in failing health for over a year and for a week before his death was very ill. Death was due to a general and gradual breakdwon of the system.

John B. Walters was born in Lewistown, Pa., July 21, 1837. When about seventeen years of age he came to Iowa with his parents, settling in the vicinity of Fairfield, Iowa.

On October 22, 1861, at the age of 23, he enlisted in Company M, 4th Iowa Cavalry, and served his country faithfully until the end of the war, being discharged August 8, 1865.

He was united in marriage to Miss Mary Allender at Fairfield, on December 30, 1868 and there were eight children born to this union. In the fall of 1871 he came to Clay county and homesteaded in Meadow township, the family coming the following spring. Here they made their home until 1895 when he retired from farm life and moved to Spencer which place has since been his home.

There are left to mourn his passing the wife and children, namely, six sons, Harry M., Guy L., Know E., Frank, Chas. M., and Ernest E., all residents of this vicinity and two daughters, Miss Anna, who is home and Mrs. Ray Roper of Eagle Grove. Also one brother, William Walters of Milford, and one sister, Mrs. Kate Lynn of San Diego, Cal.

He was a man of marked goodness of heart, always ready to do all he could for his fellow men and he will be greatly missed not only in the home but by all who knew him. He had a pleasant smile and hand shake for all. He was a devoted husband and father and the entire community extend deep sympathy to the bereaved widow and children.

The funeral services will be held from the home Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by Rev. O.M. Bond of Grace M.E. Church. The remains will be laid away with the ceremonial of the G.A.R. in Riverside cemetery
