September 14, 1991Funeral services for Cleo, 79, and Earl, 81, Van Houten of Spencer, will be held at 11 a.m. today at the First English Lutheran Church with the Rev. Chris Gugel officiating.

Earl Marrion Van Houten the son of John and Clara (Varvis) Van Houten was born August 29, 1910 in Winnebago, Nebraska. His childhood years were spent in that community and it was there he received his early education.
Cleo Helen Van Houten the daughter of Emanuel and Anna Andersen was born June 27, 1912 in Harlan. She received the early portion of her education in Harlan before the family moved to Emerson, Nebraska where she completed her schooling.
The Van Houtens married on November 3, 1932 in Elk Point, South Dakota. They began farming the Winnebago area before moving to their present farm west of Spencer in 1944. It was there Mr. Van Houten farmed until retiring in 1981.
During the early years of their marriage, Mrs. Van Houten helped on the farm. She later pursued a career in hairstyling after attending beauty school in Spencer. She opened the first beauty shop in both St. Luke Lutheran Home and Longhouse Residence. She retired in 1981.
The Van Houtens were members of the First English Lutheran Church in Spencer.
Mr. Van Houten was baptized and confirmed at the church in 1948.
Mrs. Van Houten was baptized in 1912 in Harlan and then later confirmed in Spencer's First English Lutheran Church in 1948.
Mr. Van Houten was also member of the Moose Lodge.
The Van Houtens died in an automobile accident on September 14, 1991 near Kearney, Nebraska.
Mr. Van Houten was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and two brothers.
Mrs. VanHouten was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters.
The Van Houtens are survived by their two daughters and their husbands; Darlene and Robert Jensen of Estherville and Barbara and Terry Tate of Atascadero, California; and four grandchildren.
Mr. Van Houten is also survived by one sister, Lorraine Weiss.
Mrs. Van Houten is also survived by two brothers, Robert Andersen of Berthoud, Colorado and Oliver Andersen of Longmont, Colorado and three sisters, Christy Sorenson of Emerson, Nebraska, Betty Nelson of Rosalie, Nebraska and Alice Johnson of Sioux City.
