Mary Nelson Mitts, 1849-1930

Mrs. D.A. Mitts, a resident of Clay county for 47 years, died at her home on West Fourth street, Spencer, Tuesday, December 30, 1930. She suffered a stroke of paralysis at midnight from which she never regained consciousness, passing away at 5:40 o'clock Tuesday morning.

Funeral services were held Friday afternoon, January 2, at 2:00 o'clock at the home, and at 2:30 o'clock at the Christian church, arrangements being made by the Cobb Funeral Home, Rev. W.F. Hurst, pastor of the Christian church, conducted the services, and a sextette, which sang "Jesus, Lover of My Soul" and "Abide With Me," was composed of Mr. and Mrs. C. J. Rankin, Mrs. Dan Emerson, Mrs. C.S. Weaver, Mrs. Roy Noll, and C.E. Watters.

Pallbearers were J.O. Levea, R.E.MacDuffie, C.S. Weaver, O.E. Oxley, Dr. C.J. Coder and Walter Dickinson.

Mary Josephine Nelson, daughter of John and Mary Nelson, was born in Sweden May 8, 1849. At an early age she came to this country and lived near Springfield, Illinois. On March 6, 1873, she was united in marriage to David A. Mitts and they lived on a farm near Springfield, Illinois, until 1883 when they moved to a farm north of Spencer.

In the spring of 1889, they moved to Spencer where they had since resided at their home on West Fourth street. She became a member of the Church of Christ in girlhood and remained a loyal member and a diligent worker throughout her life.

She is survived by her four daughters, Mrs. Margaret Benson of Lyle, Minnesota; Mrs. Iva McGroth of Minot, North Dakota; Mrs. Nina Sanderson of Webb, Iowa; and Flora Mitts of Spencer; four grandchildren, one great-grandchild; a sister, Emma Larson of Roseland, Nebraska, and one brother, Adolph Nelson of Springfield, Illinois. She was preceded in death by her husband on November 5, 1930, and by her only son, Madison, on January 6, 1906.
