W.L. JONES DIES AT AGE 74
HAD LIVED IN SPENCER FOR 74 YEARS; KNOWN HERE AS "BUGGY BILL"
William L. Jones, 74 years old and a pioneer resident of Clay county, died very suddenly Sunday morning, December 22, at 10:20 o'clock at his home, 702 North Main street, following an illness of heart trouble.
Mr. Jones had been in poor health for several years and failed gradually during the past few years. He awoke Sunday morning at his usual hour, got dressed and was sitting in a chair listening to the radio when he suddenly passed away.
His only son, Charles Daniel Jones of Los Angeles, California, is expected Saturday of this week and until he arrives no definite arrangements for the funeral services will be made. Burial will be made in Riverside cemetery.
Mr. Jones was born in Highland, Wisconsin, February 25, 1855. He received his schooling at Highland and at the age of 17 years he went to Belmont, Wisconsin, and it was there under the supervision of his uncle, R.D. Jones, that he learned the wheel right and wagon making business.
At Belmont, May 8, 1879, he was united in marriage to Mary Gardner Johnson. After their marriage they continued to make their home in Belmont until 1882 when they moved to Iowa and settled in Spencer. Mr. Jones was engaged in the blacksmithing, buggy and implement business in Spencer until 1910 and during that timed he received the name of "Buggy Bill" and was known throughout this community by that name.
Mr. Jones retired from business in 1910 and two years later he and his wife went to Seattle, Washington, where they lived for a few years. Their trip to Seattle was in the hope of benefitting Mrs. Jones' health but it was to no avail. She died January 2, 1918. He was also preceded in death by four children, William Mulford, Orin DeVere, Mabel Jones and Jessie May Jones Greeley.
After his wife's death he and his daughter, Jessie Greeley, lived in their home on Main Street, until her death. After that he spent a number of winters with Mrs. Ethel Besse of West Fourth street, and also with a brother, J.H. Jones of Madison. Since early fall Mr. and Mrs. C.M. Pinneo have been living with him.
Mr. Jones was a charter member of the Odd Fellows lodge at Arthur, Wisconsin.
Besides being survived by his son, Charles, of Los Angeles, he is also survived by his two brothers, Robert, of Milford, and J.H. Jones of Madison, Wisconsin, two sisters, Mrs. Mary Carr of Madison, Wisconsin, Mrs. Clara Sullivan of Hermiston, Oregon, one granddaughter, Patricia Jones, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Jones and numerous other relatives and friends.
Funeral services for William Jones will be held Sunday afternoon at two o'clock from the Cobb funeral home, Rev. B.J. Trickey officiating.
