William Craig Jackson, aged nearly seventy-seven years and a resident of Spencer since 1919, died Sunday morning at his home on East Eighth street following a long illness with heart trouble. Mr. Jackson had been ailing for the past year and toward the last felt that death was not far off.

William Craig Jackson was born in Principic, Maryland, May 4, 1845, and came with his parents when a small boy to McConnellsville, Ohio, where he grew to manhood and where at the age of seventeen, he enlisted in the Union army, serving with Co C., 97th Regiment, Ohio volunteer infantry. He served faithfully for a period of three years and was discharged with a splendid army record. He was distantly related to the "Stonewall" Jackson of the Southern army and was known to his comrades as "Stonewall" Jackson. One brother died in a hospital at Portsmouth, Virginia, as a result of illness contracted during the civil war and another brother Samuel died in Andersonville prison where he grieved until he became weak and unable to bear the hardships imposed upon the Union prisoners. Another historical incident of which Mr. Jackson was very proud was the fact that one of his ancestors became the wife of Daniel Boone, the pioneer settler of Kentucky.

Mr. Jackson was married in 1875 to Miss Florence McCall at Portsmouth, Ohio. To this union two children were born. They are Martha Mable, who became the wife of A.E. Bronson of Belle Fourche, South Dakota, and Victor McCall Jackson of Spencer. Mr. and Mrs. Jackson spent all their married life in Iowa, most of it in Sanborn. Besides the wife and children who survive him, Mr. Jackson has two brothers, O.E. Jackson of Sanborn and John E. Jackson of Kalispel, Montana. He is also survived by three sisters, all of whom were present for the funeral services, as was Mrs. Bronson; Mrs. Grizell Ethell of McConnellsville, Ohio, and Mrs. Dorinda Tavenner and Mrs. Hattie Thompson, both of Storm Lake. There is also a granddaughter, Florence Bronson, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A.E. Bronson.

Mr. Jackson was a faithful member of the G.A.R., always attending the meetings when his health permitted. He was also a member of the Knights of Pythias order and for several years an Odd Fellow.

The funeral services were held from the home yesterday afternoon at two o'clock in charge of the Rev. Robert Les Stuart, pastor of the M.E. church and interment was made in Riverside cemetery.
