At the tender age of fourteen years and six months he volunteered for the service of his country in World War I, U.S. Navy, holding two honorable discharges. Except for a short visit to Iowa, he returned to Philadelphia, where he engaged in business, until forced by failing health he retired about three years ago. He was a graduate, licensed pilot. Since then he has been in naval hospitals much of the last two years, until October 29, when at 5:45 a.m. a heart attack relieved his suffering.Lawrence leaves to mourn his passing, his father and mother, two brothers, Clarence Edward, of Emmetsburg, Iowa, and Lloyd George, of Chicago, Illinois; one sister, Inez Victoria Molison, Shenandoah, Iowa; one daughter, Mrs. Dorothy Johnston and an infant granddaughter of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and a large number of relatives and friends.
Lawrence (Larry) as he was known back east, had a kind word and a pleasant smile for everyone at all times and in return was esteemed by all with whom he came in contact, which was shown not alone by the massive floral offerings but also by acts of kindness and speech. The body lay in state in the chapel from 6 to 10 p.m. November 2nd, and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. November 3rd. Guard of Honor was posted and relieved every fifteen minutes. Reverend Grannum J. Mahon delivered the service; then the military chaplain took over. Full military honors were accorded the deceased and the remains laid to rest in the National cemetery in Philadelphia. Military orders participating, Peter J. Nelly, Commander in charge; Rising Sun Post V.F.W. The Times wishes to add a few lines to the above. We knew Lawrence as a boy and as a young man. He was always gentlemanly, courteous and pleasant and was liked by all who knew him. We extend our sincere sympathy to the sorrowing parents and to the other members of the family in their sorrow. Mr. and Mrs. Molison left Spencer for Philadelphia immediately upon receiving the news of their son’s illness. However, they arrived a few hours too late. Graettinger friends as well as the Times sympathize with them in their hour of sorrow. (Graettinger Times, Graettinger, IA, November 30, 1944)
