Spencer, IowaJean Ardelle Mills Evans was born to Samuel and Adeline (Evans) Mills on March 8, 1921, at Webb, Iowa. She attended school in Rosie and Greenville, graduating from Greenville High School.
Jean married Lawrence Leon Evans on April 20, 1942, at her parents home in Greenville, IA. Jean spent her life taking care of her four daughters, sewing for her girls, raising a big garden and crocheted many things. Jean was known for her famous chocolate chip cookies and banana and raisin cream pies.
Jean worked at the Vermeer Plant, as a housekeeper at St. Luke Lutheran Home, and was a dispatcher for the Spencer Fire Department.
Jean and Lawrence enjoyed their cabin at Lost Island Lake, spending time traveling with their camper, and spending several winters in Arizona. Her sons-in-law loved to pick on Jean but she gave it right back to them.
On July 14, 2008, Jean passed away at the Spencer Hospital at the age of 87. She was preceded in death by her parents, Sam and Addie Mills; and an infant brother, Daniel.
Left to cherish her memory is her husband of 66 years, Lawrence; her four daughters: Carol (Roger) Kathman of Spencer, IA, Joyce (Wayne) Smith of Pella, IA, Linda (James) Gunn of Hazelwood, MO, Anita (Rodney) Petersen of Hartley, IA; foster son, Thomas (Donna) Toiberg of Spencer, IA; special fifth daughter, Shirley Kirk of Spencer, IA; two sisters: Marilyn (Barney) Mullihan of Spirit Lake, IA, Ardyce (Don) Rush of Arnolds Park, IA; two brothers: Gale (Bette) of Alamo, TX, and Don (Viola) of Fort Walton Beach, FL; 12 grandkids; 15 great-grandkids; three great-great-grandkids; her church family; several nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
