Stewart A. Mackie, the son of Hugh and Nina Mackie, was born December 7, 1923, on a farm east of Laurens, Iowa. He graduated from Laurens High School.

Following graduation, he entered the Army and was stationed at Walker Air Force Base in Kansas during WWII. Following his honorable discharge in 1946, he signed with the Brooklyn Dodger Organization and was sent to play ball at Three Rivers, Canada as a pitcher. He returned to Spencer in the fall and worked for Forrest Weisbrod in the Standard Station at First and Grand.

In 1947, he married Margaret M. Bale in Ruthven, Iowa.

Following their marriage, they went to Greenville, SC, where Stew played baseball with the Greenville Spinners, a farm club of the Dodgers, where he also played in 1948 and part of 1949, returning each fall to Spencer, where he was employed by Schnoor Motor Company.

In 1949, they returned to Spencer and Stew played for the Spencer Cardinals until the Cardinals folded in 1957.

They purchased the Standard Station located at 1st and Grand from Dale Fina in 1949, which they operated until they built their own Service Station on 11th St. S.W. in 1969.

They sold out to Forrest Knight in 1972 and moved to Colorado Springs, CO, where Stew was employed at the Walker Lumber Door Shop. They returned to Spencer in 1974 and Stew was employed at Lumbermens Millwork in north Spencer until it closed in 1980.

In July, 1980 he became Spencers first full time Fire Chief, and served until his mandatory retirement in January of 1989. He had been a Volunteer Fireman for 17 years.

He also worked at Mid-States Builders during the summer months from 1990 to 2005. Stew and Margaret started wintering in Phoenix, AZ in 1990, and became permanent residents in 2005.

In his free time Stewart enjoyed woodworking, golf, and bowling, but most of all Stewart loved being around his family and friends.

Stew passed away at the John C. Lincoln Memorial Hospital in Phoenix, AZ on Tuesday, May 13, 2008 at the age of 84. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, George Mackie and his wife, Charlene, and Lionel Bussey, and two brothers-in-law, Darold Faulkner and Lowell Lindstrom.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Margaret of Phoenix, AZ; two sons: Larry and his wife, Kathryn Mackie of Scottsdale, AZ and Bradley and his wife, Melinda Mackie of Broomfield, CO; two daughters: Jackie and her husband, Jeff Huckfelt of Spencer, IA and Janet Doede of Webster, TX; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two sisters: Roberta Lindstrom, Sun City, AZ and Violetta Faulkner of Sumner, IA; sister-in-law, Marge Bussey of Laurens, IA, and other relatives and many friends.
