Betty Caren Klarstrom, the daughter of Harry and Kristina (Frank) Nielsen, was born October 2, 1914, in Sioux City, IA. At the age of 1, Bettys parents moved to Cleghorn, IA, where she was baptized in the Presbyterian Church. As a young child, Bettys parents moved to a farm north of Hartley where she attended a country school in Harrison Township. After graduating from 8th grade, Betty stayed home a year and attended confirmation at the Trinity Evangelical Reform Church. She attended High School in Hartley, graduating with a class of 34 in 1934.

Following graduation, Betty worked at an Egg Grading business until she met Claude whom she married on August 18, 1940, and were married 55 years before he passed away.

Betty and Claude farmed in the Clay County area and after their 2 daughters started school, Betty worked for the Delaney Nursing Home in Spencer for 11 years. She also did private care for Art Anderson (President of Clay County National Bank) and his wife.

Following Arts death, Betty worked 11 years at Aalfs Sewing Factory, and her last employment was custodian at Bethany Lutheran Church for 21 years. After retiring, she worked at home catching up on all the things that were left undone. She had a good life but a busy one!

Betty passed away at the Spencer Hospital on February 16, 2008, at the age of 93. Preceding her in death was her parents and her husband, Claude on June 16, 1995.

Left to cherish her memory are her 2 loving daughters and best son-in-laws anyone could ask for: Connie and Richard Noble and Janice and Dean Alexander; 4 married grandchildren: Patty and Todd Brigham of Spencer, IA; Steve and Patti Alexander, Kristin and Bill Winters, and Brad and Melanie Alexander, all from Arkansas; 9 great-grandchildren; one brother, Art Nielsen of Pipestone, MN; one sister, Pearl Protextor of Sanborn, IA; 1 sister-in-law, Joyce Kiley of Erie, CO; 2 brothers-in-law: Jack Protextor of Sanborn, IA, and Larry Kiley of Erie, CO; other nieces, nephew and friends.
