Spencer, IowaGail (Pete) Peterson, the son of Roy R. and Louie Mabel (Westcott) Peterson, was born November 7, 1919, in Winside, NE. Gail grew up in Arlington, NE and graduated from high school there. He was a graduate of the University of Nebraska School of Agriculture with a B.S. in Agronomy. Gail was employed in agri-business enterprises.
Gail served in W.W. II from September 1942 to September 1945. He was sent to Torrento Air Force Base in Italy with the Army Air Force 461st Bomb Group H to work in communications.
Gail and Verna Ruth Thornburg were married April 14, 1949. They were blessed with one son, Eric Thornburg Peterson.
Gail was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church, serving in many capacities. In retirement he served on several mission teams. He was a member of the Masonic Order, Order of the Eastern Star-Evening Shade Chapter 116 and the Abu Bekr Shrine. He was a Past-Master of Evening Shade Lodge #312 AF and AM, and had served as Secretary. Gail served on the board of the Spencer Public Library and Spencer Area Concert Association. He was a member of the Clay County Garden Club and Golden K. In retirement, he enjoyed the 461st Reunion Group. His special interests were baseball, gardening, traveling, music and dancing.
Gail passed away on June 27, 2007, in Spencer at the age of 87. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters: Ramah Riddle, Cletis Wilson and Myra Huntley; two brothers: Brian Westcott and Rob Roy Peterson.
Left to honor his memory are his wife of 58 years, Verna Peterson of Spencer; his son Eric and wife, Susan; and his grandchildren, Jesse Andrew and April Amanda, all of Sioux Falls, SD; his sister, Jean Tata of Plattsmouth, NE; 8 nephews and 8 nieces; his Grace United Methodist Church family and other friends.
