Don served on the Board of Directors for the Clay County Fair and the Royal Telephone Company, and was involved with the Clay County Soil and Water Conservation District for 30 years.

Beginning in 1985, Don and Lucy spent some of their winter months in Mesa, AZ and enjoyed their friends at Valle Del Ora Resort. In 2006, Don was inducted into the Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame honoring 70 years of service to Clay County 4-H.
