Spencer, IowaDonald (Doodle) Steffen, the son of Clarence Rudolf and Hilda Augusta (Schoelerman) Steffen, was born February 28, 1927 in Royal, Iowa. His childhood years were spent in the Royal area where he received his early education, graduating from Everly High School in 1944. After graduation Don served in the army, and was stationed in Italy during the second World War.
Don married Lucile Olson on June 5, 1949. Following their marriage, they farmed near Rossie until they moved to Spencer in 1995. Don was an active member of the Rossie United Church of Christ and the First Congregational Church in Spencer. Don served on the Board of Directors for the Clay County Fair and the Royal Telephone Company, and was involved with the Clay County Soil and Water Conservation District for 30 years.
Beginning in 1985, Don and Lucy spent some of their winter months in Mesa, AZ and enjoyed their friends at Valle Del Ora Resort. In 2006, Don was inducted into the Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame honoring 70 years of service to Clay County 4-H.
Surrounded by his family, Don passed away at home in Spencer on June 12, 2007 at the age of 80. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Ingwer and Kenneth.
He is survived by his wife, Lucile of Spencer; three sons and their wives: Jay and Murt of Ames, Terry and Marcia of Linn Grove, and Cory and Susan of Linn Grove; one daughter, Connie of Altoona; nine grandchildren: Heather, Tessa, Tye, Katie, Heidi and Paul Mogush, Jessob, Kylara, Megan, and Ian; a great-grandson, Benjamin Mogush. Don enjoyed farming, dancing, playing pool, his family and many friends.
