Spencer, IowaRobert Martin Kunert, the son of Edward Herman and Marie (McNalley) Kunert, was born April 28, 1937 in Emmetsburg, Iowa. His childhood years were spent in Emmetsburg, where he received his education at St. Ellens Catholic School, moving to Spencer, Iowa in 1943, where he attended Sacred Heart Schools through the 8th grade. His class was the first 8th grade class to graduate from the new school. He then attended Spencer High School.
Bob married Lorelei Jean Hallcock on February 25, 1956 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Spencer and they made their home in Spencer. Bob was a memorable man to anyone who met him. If he liked you, he really liked you, and if he didn't, you knew it. Always the perfectionist, he was a master craftsman in housing, construction and woodworking, as well as a self-made engineer.
For 23 years, he worked as a foreman for Freeburg Construction before going into business for himself, specializing in cabinet making and vintage home restoration. Anyone who spent time with Bob was sure to learn something (even if it was just a colorful new phrase!). It wasn't his trade, but he was a great teacher and mentor. He always took the time to make sure you knew what you were doing, why you were doing it, and how to do it properly.
In his early years, his hobbies included fishing, hunting, and taking his kids on camping trips. He always had an interest in mechanical work and for the last few years, has been restoring a tractor given to him by a friend. In his retirement, he enjoyed spending more time with his friends, including his Saturday morning coffee buddies. He took pride in all of his work and always told his children. If you don't have the time to do a job right the first time, how are you gonna find time to do it a second time?
Bob passed away at his home in Spencer on Sunday, March 11, 2007 at the age of 69. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Joseph; an infant brother, Ronald; a sister, Gwen Swenson; a nephew, Tom Curry and three brother-in-laws.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Lorelei Jean of Spencer; his children and their spouses: Bev Krukow and Rick Hess of Webb, IA, Steve and Nancy Kunert of Cedar Rapids, IA, William (Bill) and Cindy Kunert of Spencer, Robin and Brian Miller of Loveland, CO, Dawn and Nick Hrabak of Cedar Rapids, IA and Brian and Glenda Kunert of Evans, CO; 11 grandchildren; five great grandchildren; three sisters: Lorraine Fay of Wallingford, IA, Geraldine Curry of Estherville, IA and Darlene Curry of Spencer; a sister-in-law, Gloria Kunert of New Jersey; numerous nieces, nephews and many, many friends.
