Bernice Marie Rice, the daughter of Carl and Margaret (Dunker) Holtz, was born on January 10, 1922, in Trimont, MN. Her childhood years were spent in that community, where she received her education and graduated from Trimont High School.

On October 2, 1944, Bernice married Frank Albert Rice, Jr. in El Paso, TX. Following their marriage, they owned and operated a cafe in Trimont, MN. They later moved to Spencer, where she worked at various jobs. They also lived in the communities of Sioux City, West Point, NE and returned to Trimont, MN where they purchased the same cafe and ran it for 10 years. They returned to Spencer in 1981, where they made their home.

Bernice was a member of the Legion Auxiliary in Trimont and a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Spencer. Bernice liked to cook and sew and took pride in the fact that she was a hard worker. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Bernice passed away at the Mary's Hospital in Rochester, MN, on August 29, 2006, at the age of 84. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Frank in 1996; one sister, Leona Holtz and four brothers: Art, Elmer, Clarence and Harold.

Left to cherish her memory are her son, Brent Rice and his wife, Rosemary of Norwalk, IA; her daughter, Ronda Roskens and her husband, Del of Everly, IA; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one brother, Willard (Bud) Holtz and his wife, Doris of Trimont, MN; one sister, Alma Colvin and her husband, Dick of the Twin Cities, MN; other relatives and friends.
