James Dale Swanson, the son of Leon & Lela (Brinkley) Swanson, was born December 23, 1930 at his home in Greenville, IA. His childhood years were spent on the family farm south of Spencer, where he received his education from the Greenville school. Following his schooling, he entered the military and served with the Army while stationed in Germany, until his honorable discharge.

Jim married Opal Simington on October 1, 1956 in Sioux Falls, SD. Following their marriage, they lived in Spencer, where he drove semi truck for 47 years for numerous companies in northwest Iowa. He retired from trucking in 1996. He also most recently mowed and drove tractor for Greg Knight.

Jim was a member of the 1st English Lutheran Church in Spencer. Jim was liked by all that knew him and especially enjoyed the births of his grandchildren, spending time with his family and having coffee with friends.

Jim passed away at McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD on Wednesday, August 23, 2006 at the age of 75.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his mother and father-in-law; one sister, Shirley Campbell; his brother-in-law, Loren Campbell, a nephew, Steve Campbell and a daughter-in-law, Dawn Swanson.

He is survived by his wife, Opal of Spencer; four sons and their wives: Rod and Sandy Swanson of Brainerd, MN, Randy and Margie Swanson & their boys, Spencer, Brady, John and Adam and Chris and Lori Swanson & their children, Drake and Piper all of Spencer and Tim and Kelly Swanson & their children, Clayton and Raegen of Emmetsburg; one sister, Jan Swanson of Spencer; one brother, Chuck and his wife, Mary Swanson of Clinton, IA; other relatives and many friends.
