Veda Lorene Hemmig Steffen, the daughter of Carl and Minnie Louise Katherine (Kruckenberg) Hemmig, was born August 26, 1924, at home on her grandfathers Theophil Hemmig farm, near May City, Iowa.

She was baptized at St. John's Lutheran Church in May City, Iowa, on September 21, 1924, and confirmed in the faith on September 7, 1941. At home she learned the joy of household tasks; her favorite was caring for her baby brother, Ted. St. John's Lutheran was a large part of her life growing up. It was there at church she learned to give speeches and sing duets with her sister, Verna. On the evening of October 10, 1946, 60 years ago, Veda married Ingwer John Rudolph Steffen.

Following their wedding, they made their home on the farm near Greenville, Iowa. Veda loved working with Ing on the farm, gardening, caring for pets and livestock and being involved with the young people in Ing's 4-H club, The Gillet Grove Clippers. Veda was a member of First English Lutheran Church, LWML, and Naomi and Martha Guilds. Veda was also a long time member of the Greenville Home Circle. She stayed on the farm until 1999 when she moved to Riverview Terrace, and later to St. Luke Lutheran Home.

Veda entered into eternal rest on August 7, 2006, at the age of 81. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ingwer; grandson, Aaron; sister, Vivian Rothner and two brothers: Chester and Orville.

Left to cherish her memory are two sons and their wives: Kell and Rosemary of Greenville, IA, and Rodney and Gloria of Fort Meade, FL; two grandsons and their wives: Jared and Katie of Seattle, WA, and Adam and Vanessa of Coralville, IA; one sister and her husband, Verna and Marvin Kopp of Hoyt Lakes, MN; one brother and his wife, Ted and Kathy of San Jose, CA; as well as many other relatives and friends.
