Jay Rolla Gould, the son of Harry and Adrianna (VerHage) Gould, was born December 23, 1928, in Sibley, Iowa. He received his early education in Sibley and graduated in 1947 from the Sibley High School. Following high school, Jay attended Sioux Falls College for two years and then graduated with a B.S. degree from Mankato State in 1952. He then received his Masters degree from University of South Dakota in 1963.

Jay married Margaret Peel on May 24, 1953, in Sibley, Iowa. Following their marriage, he taught in the communities of Alton, IA, Ellsworth, MN, Jackson, MN, and in 1957 they moved to Spencer where he taught and retired from teaching. Jay also worked part-time at J.C. Penneys for 10 years. Jay was a very active member of the First Baptist Church where he was the Choir Director for 30 years. He was also a member of the Garden Club.

Mr. Gould passed away on June 1, 2006, at the Heart Hospital of South Dakota in Sioux Falls, SD at the age of 77. He is preceded in death by his parents; 4 sisters: Helen VerHage, Cleo Becker, Alice Duckworth and Gloria Householder; 2 brothers: Harold and Donald Gould; one son, Richard Gould.

Jay always said the most important thing that happened in his life was when he accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior in June of 1941.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret of Spencer, IA; 4 sons: Dan (Linda) Gould of Boone, IA, Bill (Beth) Gould of Apple Valley, MN, Brad (Patti) Gould of Cincinnati, OH and Doug Gould of Boone, IA; one daughter-in-law, Beth (Andy) Kilpatrick of Hewitt, TX; eleven grandchildren: Rachel (Lee) Patten, Laura Gould, Mallory Gould, Billy Gould, Tim Gould, Tom Gould, Christina Gould, Melissa Gould, Josh Gould, Sarah Gould and Richie Gould; nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
