Spencer, IowaMildred Marie Kitchen, the daughter of John and Nellie (Huss) Ihry, was born April 4, 1918, in Royal, Iowa. Her childhood years were spent in Royal where she received her education, graduating from Royal High School.
Following high school, she married Bub DeGarmo and moved to Omaha to attend beauty school while her husband was in the service. Her husband died while serving in WW II. She moved to Early, Iowa, where she owned and operated her own beauty salon.
Mildred married Dr. Carl Kitchen on November 9, 1946, in Sioux Falls, SD. Following their marriage, they lived in the communities of Spencer and Estherville from 1946 to 1960. In 1960, they moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where they had since made their home while wintering in Mesa, Arizona during their later years. She was a member of St. Matthew's Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. She was active in bridge clubs and dancing in her earlier years.
Mildred passed away at her winter home in Mesa, Arizona on Sunday, April 30, 2006, at the age of 88. She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Bub DeGarmo; and two brothers: Nick and Jack Ihry.
She is survived by her husband, Dr. Carl Kitchen of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; one daughter, Mickie and her husband, Ken Hansen of Potrero, CA; one son, John and his wife, Darlene Kitchen of Arizona; 3 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; one sister, Cleo and her husband, Tom Garrod of Spencer, IA; one brother, Emil (Skip) Ihry of Lancaster, PA; other relatives and many friends.
