George Lewis Alger, the son of William "Bill" and Ethel Speed Alger, was born July 11, 1925 in Logan Township, Clay County, Iowa. His childhood years were spent in the Gillett Grove area, where he received his education, graduating from Gillett Grove High School in 1943.

George married Dorothy Salton on February 15, 1948 at Grace United Methodist Church in Spencer, Iowa. Following their marriage, they farmed for many years near Gillett Grove. He was a member of the Gillett Grove Methodist Church. George was active in 4-H and that organization was very important to him. He was a 4-H leader in Logan Township, was a member of the Clay County 4-H Committee and served as the Clay County Fair 4-H Beef Superintendent. He was the first recipient of the Long Time 4-H Beef Volunteer award and the 1996 Clay County Cattleman of the Year. He also sponsored a calf for the Clay County Scramble Calf Program for several years. He was a member of the Evening Shade Lodge #312 in Spencer, Evening Shade Chapter #116, the Order Of The Eastern Star in Spencer, Scottish Rite Consistory and the Abu Bekr Shrine of Sioux City, Past Master of Perfection Lodge in Webb and the Farm Bureau.

Mr. Alger passed away on July 25, 2007 at his home at the age of 82. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Orrin and Don.

He is survived by is wife, Dorothy of Dickens, IA; one son and his wife, Roger and Ruth Alger of Missouri Valley, IA; two daughters: Janice Alger of Dickens, IA and Diane Bargfrede and her husband, Craig of Ankeny, IA; three grandchildren: Alysia Alger, Philip Bargfrede and Grant Bargfrede; one sister, Karen Titler of Everly, IA; other relatives and friends.
