Joseph French, 1849-1911

Joseph French died at his home in Spencer last Thursday morning after an illness of some time. Mr. French was born in Jones county, Iowa, May 14, 1849. In 1881 he moved to Clay county, Iowa, locating near what was then called Yankee postoffice in the west part of the county. He lived in Missouri for a short time then lived in South Dakota, for seven years and two ago last April moved to Spencer.

He has been in poor health for some time and about three years ago was taken worse and has been a great sufferer, but patient.

In 1878 Mr. French was converted and baptised. He favored the Free Baptist church but did not unite with any organization. Mr. French was a very quiet and unassuming man. He was truthful and upright in his business dealings. He had the respect of all who knew him.

December 1, 1875, he was united in marriage to Victoria Marie Tippett and to them were born five children, there having died in infancy, two, Viola and Carl, with the bereaved wife being left to mourn the death of husband and father. Mr. French leaves a host of relatives and friends besides.

The funeral was held at the residence on east 2nd street Saturday at two o'clock, conducted by Rev. A.M. Leichleiter and the body was laid to rest in Riverside cemetery.
