Herbert Allen Birchard, the son of Clayton Eugene and Myrtle Ida (Prentice) Birchard, was born on a farm outside of Ayrshire, IA. He was raised in Gillett Grove and Milford, IA. He graduated from the Milford High School. Following his schooling, Herb worked as a farm hand until entering the U.S. States Army and served from 1951 to 1953 during the Korean War and in Germany.
Herbert married Linda May Knight on December 31, 1953, in Spencer, IA. Following their marriage, Herb started working for John Deere in Everly. He then moved to Dickinson County in 1955, where he farmed and resided. After he retired from farming, Herb worked at the Fostoria Elevator and for an area farmer. He attended the Methodist Church in Fostoria and was a member of the American Legion Glen Pedersen Post #1 of Spencer. Herb enjoyed farming, gardening, dancing and playing cards. He especially loved spending time with his family.
Herb passed away on September 22, 2010, at the Spencer Hospital at the age of 81. He is preceded in death by his parents; 2 sisters: Madge Warner and Jennie Quee; and one brother, Clarence Birchard.
Herb is survived by his wife, Linda of Milford, IA; two daughters and their husbands: Julie and Bill Hoben of Coralville, IA, and Tammy and Edward Birchard of Ruthven, IA; 2 grandchildren; 2 step-grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren and 4 step-great-grandchildren; sister, Gladys "Birdie" Tibbetts of Peterson, IA; brother, Dale (Lois) Birchard of Tucson, AZ; sister-in-law, Alma "Tootie" Birchard of Spencer, IA; other relatives and friends.
