Ira Reed Baker, a prominent citizen of Everly, died at his home on Thursday, March 31, following a short illness with pneumonia.

Ira Reed Baker, son of Mr. Walter Baker and his wife Salome, was born June 11, 1873, Lewistown, Pennsylvania, the fifth of a family of nine children, He was baptized in the Lutheran Church, was reared in a Christian atmosphere and was consecrated to God in the rite of confirmation.

Of high ambitions as a young man, he attended the Ohio Northern University simultaneously with his brother Samuel Baker, both graduating in 1900. Following the profession of a school man. Mr. Baker taught and was principal at Riegelsville, Pennsylvania, later coming to Lewiston, Pennsylvania, where he taught in the high school.

Coming west, the departed came to Iowa, taught north of Spencer for one year and in 1911 became superintendent of the Everly School. This position he held for five years proving himself to be conscientious and capable. During this time he met and pledged sacred troth to Miss Bertha Brugmann, a teacher in the schools, in whom he found a devoted and loving wife. Two children came to bless their union. Retiring from school work Mr. Baker became engaged in the hardware business for a number of years until recently when he became salesman for a well known household article. From an an affliction from which had contracted he seemed to rally and of late was particularly happy in his work until Sunday morning, March 27, when he was taken ill.

Mr. Baker was a loving husband and a kind father. He was a Christian gentleman and a public spirited citizen who gave of his time freely. For years he taught in the Sunday schools of his community. He served on the Board of Education and was President of the Community Club of Everly. He belonged to Masonic Order and the Blue Lodge and Eastern Star of Everly, and the Clay Chapter No. 112, R.A.M. and Azotus Commandery No. 65, Knights Templar of Spencer. He was also a member of the Modern Woodman. His life was a influence for the good.

His departure is keenly felt by his loving wife, Mrs. Bertha Baker, their sons, Lee Mason and Orlyn Rex Baker; seven brothers and sister, James M. Baker, attorney, at Beaver Springs, Pennsylvania, Dr. William M. Baker, Lewistown, Pennsylvania, Mrs Adar C. Aurand, Lewistown, Pennsylvania, Mrs. Lizzie Aurand, Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, Samuel Baker, Saint Louis, Missouri, Kirby Baker, contractor, Akron, Ohio; eight brothers-in-law; 4 sisters-in-law; and a host of other relatives and friends who cherish his memory.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon, April 3, at the home and at the Lutheran Church of Everly. Rev, S, Albrecht of Hartley conducted the services. Special vocal selections were given by Rev. and Mrs. R.A. Doss of Everly. Interment took place at the Everly Cemetery, where the Masonic Lodge had charge of the services. The Masonic order attended in a body and had charge of the burial service. The large assembly gave proof of the esteem in which Mr. Baker was held.
