June 11, 1949 - September 21, 2012Timothy Jay Galm was born June 11, 1949, in Spencer, IA, the second of eight children to Dorothy Marie Dykstra and Edwin John Galm of Moneta, IA, where Tim grew up. Tim graduated from Everly Community High School in 1968. He graduated cum laude from Creighton University in Omaha, NE, where he earned his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, majoring in economics and finance. Tim was a graduate research assistant at Iowa State University in the Department of Economics. He was a graduate teaching assistant there for Dr. William Murray, an early pioneer in the field of agricultural appraisal. Tim earned his Master of Science Degree in Agricultural Economics. Tim farmed his entire life in addition to working in the fields of mortgage lending, appraisal, farm management, and real estate.
Tim's first job was as a Farm Management Specialist for the Iowa State University Extension Service in northwest Iowa. He then worked for the Mutual Benefit Life Insurance Company of Newark, NJ, as a farm mortgage loan officer, appraiser, farm manager, and real estate broker, also representing the company in bankruptcy hearings and mediations. Tim continued in those positions with Hertz Farm Management of Nevada, IA. In 2002 he started his own company, Ag Appraisal & Land Management, also doing business as Farm and Home Appraisals of Fostoria, IA.
Tim earned both the Accredited Rural Appraiser (ARA) and Accredited Farm Manager (AFM) national designations from the American Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers (ASFMRA). He spent over thirty years managing farms and appraising properties throughout northwest Iowa and the Midwest. He also did appraisal work for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, the Iowa Department of Transportation, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and Iowa county engineers. Tim was a Certified General Real Property Appraiser in Iowa, Nebraska, and Minnesota.
In 1997, Governor Terry Branstad appointed Tim to the Iowa Agricultural Development Authority (IADA) Board. He was reappointed by Governor Tom Vilsack and served until April, 2012, helping young farmers get started in farming. Tim served as both President and Treasurer of the IADA Board as well as a member of the Loan Committee.
Tim served as President of the Clay Central Everly Athletic Booster Club as well as the Everly St. Mary Parish Council and the parish Finance Committee. He was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church parish in Milford, IA, and a third degree Knight of Columbus.
At a high school class reunion four years ago, Tim said his greatest joy was 'watching and participating with Rob and Elizabeth's growth and maturity into young adulthood and their marriages to wonderful life mates.' His most valuable lesson learned throughout the years was 'to be patient, loving, and caring with his family co-workers, and clients.' His greatest success was 'raising a wonderful family with Molly.' He was most proud of 'our family's unity and kindness to each other.' What he enjoyed most was 'the time I get to spend with Molly.' When asked if he had any regrets, Tim answered, 'No regrets - I've lived my dream.'
Tim's family brought him much joy and was the most important thing in his life. Tim coached his children's youth basketball and softball teams, designed his family's earth-sheltered home thirty years ago, planted over 27,000 trees there, and was very proud of sending his kids off to school every day with a hot, cooked breakfast.
Most recently Tim enjoyed time at his family's cabin in the Wahpeton area of Lake Okoboji and relaxing in Cabo San Lucas with Molly and new friends. In earlier years he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and golfing.
Tim was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin and Dorothy Galm, his brother Joseph Galm, and his sister-in-law, Kay Galm. He is survived by the love of his life and spouse of forty years, Molly Mulqueen, as well as their children, Robert Galm and his wife Dr. Katherine Galm of Loveland, CO, and Elizabeth and Michael Jensen of Omaha, NE, two grand-daughters, Olivia Lou Galm and Lucy Jewel Galm (born 9/25/12), one soon-to-be born grandchild, two brothers, Dana Galm of Moneta, IA, and Paul (Brenda) Galm of Spencer, IA, four sisters, Kathleen Matthews of Storm Lake, IA, Julie Galm-Dillingham of Milford, IA, Cindy Galm of Melrose, FL, and Patrice Galm of Boone, IA, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and many friends and colleagues.
