Edwin John Galm
April 20, 1927 - May 14, 2011

Edwin John Galm was born April 20, 1927, on the family farm near Moneta, IA, the third of seven children to John and Amalie Schaefer Galm. Graduating from Moneta Community School in 1944, He spent his life farming near Everly, Royal, and Moneta, IA, with his wife of 63 years, Dorothy Dykstra Galm. Ed passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 14, 2011, at the Longhouse Residence, Spencer, IA.

The devoted father of eight children, Ed was greatly interested in the lives of his and Dorothy's 19 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He will be especially remembered for his devotion to family and his kind-hearted nature.

Loading their children in the family station wagon for Sunday picnics and summer vacations at Lake Okoboji, swimming lessons at the Spencer pool and at Clay County's Scharnberg Park, keeping Sundays, Holy Days, and holidays sacred, playing cards, teaching a strong work ethic in the family fields and stockyards, devoutly attending school functions, and with their keen interest in a variety of sports, Edwin and Dorothy supplied many good memories for their grateful children.

Always working side by side, Ed and Dorothy, on numerous occasions were named "Iowa Master Corn Growers" in contests sponsored by the Iowa Corn Implement Association, using DeKalb and Crow hybrids.

Edwin was a member of the Everly Lions Club and, as president, was especially active in the conception and construction of Scharnberg Park, located near Everly. At that time Edwin was also on the Clay County Conservation Board. He served on the Moneta School Board during the redistricting efforts that merged Moneta with the Hartley and Everly school districts. He was also a long-time adult leader of the Lone Tree County Line 4-H Club. Ed claimed top honors at numerous local and invitational golf tournaments throughout his life. He was also an active member of St. Louis Catholic Church in Royal, St. Mary's Catholic Church in Everly, and Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Spencer, IA.

Edwin was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy, their son, Joseph Francis Galm, age 24, his parents, three brothers--Paul Galm of Royal, Herman Galm of Royal, and John Galm of San Jose, CA; two brothers-in-law, Delmar Tewes of Royal and Lester Dykstra of Everly; two sisters-in-law, Sybil Weir of San Jose, CA and Pat Dykstra of Hartley.

Grateful for having shared his life are three sons-- Tim Galm and wife, Molly Mulqueen, of Everly; Dana Galm and wife, Kay, of Hartley; and Paul Galm and wife, Brenda, of Spencer; four daughters-- Kathleen Matthews of Storm Lake; Jullie Dillingham and husband, Randy, of Spirit Lake; Cindy Galm and Mike Walsh of Melrose, FL; and Patrice Galm and Don Stanton of Boone, IA; one brother, Bernard Galm of Spencer; two sisters--Ruth Tewes of Royal and Sr. Margaret Galm, O.S.F. of Dubuque; two brothers-in-law, Vernon Dykstra and wife, Norma, of Mesa, AZ, and Elmer Dykstra and wife, Gloria, of Spencer; four sisters-in-law, Betty Bonker and husband, Leonard, of Harlingen, TX; Barbara Dykstra of Everly, Joyce Thompsen of Royal, Delores Ransom and husband, Ray, of Spirit Lake; 19 grandchildren-- Robert Galm and wife, Katie; Elizabeth Jensen and husband, Mike; Theresa Matthews; Joshua Matthews; Jeff Matthews and wife, Lisa; Joseph Galm; Alicia Galm; Adam Galm; Heidi Petersen; John Schmidt; Casey Schmidt; Melissa Britton Hesner and husband, Kevin; Terri Britton Cuttell and husband, Greg; Nikki Stoneburner and husband, Shane; Kristi Harson; Kelly O'Connor; Cassie Galm; Abby Galm; and Nathan Galm; 12 great-grandchildren-- Olivia Galm; Kaylin Petersen; Dalton Petersen; Jacob Hesner; Benjamin Hesner; Tatum Cuttell; Scott Cuttell; Briar Cuttell; Olivia Stoneburner; Ethan Stoneburner; R.J. Wisnewski; Kylie Wisnewski; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Hospice of Northwest Iowa and Longhouse Residence staff for their kind and professional care of Edwin during his stay.
