Mrs. Christiana Chalfant aged nearly sixty-four and a resident of Clay county since 1890, died Sunday, March 18, 1923, at her home near Webb. Her death occurred after only a few hours of severe illness and came as a great shock to relatives and friends, although she had been a sufferer from heart trouble for the past two years.

Christiana Phillips was born March 26, 1850, in Canada, and at the time of her death was 63 years, 11 months and 23 days of age. She moved with her parents to the United States at the age of seven and settled in Kansas, where she lived during her childhood.

In 1876 she was married to John Chalfant and they made their home in Kansas until 1890, when they came to Clay county, settling near Webb and living here until her death.

Mrs. Chalfant united with the Congregational church in 1905 and has always enjoyed doing good and making everyone around her happier. She was a good mother, a lovable wife and helpmate and was always ready to give a willing hand to those in need.

Mr. Chalfant died eight years ago and she is survived by eight children. They are Mrs. Phoebe Morris, of Gillett Grove; Mrs. Lottie Mills, Maynard, Minnesota; John E., Silas E., Clarence E. Webb; Mrs. Dollie Reed, Kuna, Idaho; Mrs. Maggie McArthur, Sanborn, Minnesota; Guy E., St. Paul, Minnesota. There are also seventeen grandchildren, three brothers and one sister.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 21, at twelve-thirty o'clock at the home and at one-thirty o'clock in the M.E. church. The services were in charge of the Rev. Gow, of Rinard, who was assisted by the Rev. Jacobson. Interment was made in Liberty cemetery.
