Charlyn M. Bennett, 83, of Sioux City, passed away Sunday, March 13, 2011, at a local hospital. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 21, 2011, at First United Methodist Church with Reverend Roger Madden officiating. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Sunday, March 20, 2011, with the family present from 6-7 p.m. Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery in rural Spencer, Ia.
Charlyn was born the daughter of Harry F. and Reka (Mett) Petersen on Feb. 26, 1928, in Spencer, Ia. She graduated from Summit Township and Spencer High School and later from the American Institute of Business in 1946. She was employed as Secretary at Anderson-Erickson & Dairy Industries in Des Moines. She married Wilbur D. "Pete" Bennett on Dec. 26, 1948. The couple moved to Ames, Ia. where she was employed as Secretary to the Head of the Poultry Department at ISU. The couple moved to Paullina, Iowa in 1951 and she was Secretary to the Superintendent of Schools there. They moved to Toledo, Iowa in 1953 and while there she became Bookkeeper for the Oldsmobile Garage. Char and Pete moved to Sioux City in 1956. She was employed as Secretary and Bookkeeper by C. F. Lytle Company. Later, Pete and Char formed the Sioux Land Farm Agency Corporation.
Char was a long time, active member of First Untied Methodist Church. She was an avid golfer and loved playing bridge, reading the newspaper, doing crosswords, and an avid Iowa State Cyclone fan.
Charlyn is survived by one brother, Lindell R. "Pete" (Jackie) Petersen of Spencer, Ia.; two sisters-in-law: Janice Wachter of Grand Rapids, Mich., and Donna Herweg of Brewer, Maine; one brother-in-law, Jay Colburn of Plano, Texas; nine nieces; three nephews; numerous great nieces and nephews; two godsons: Robert and Richard Lott; and special friends: Jeff and JuLee Buchman of Sioux City.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Pete; and one nephew.
Interment in Evergreen cemetery
