Funeral Services Are Held Tuesday for George T. Ellis

George T. Ellis of Spencer, one of the pioneer settlers of this community, died Saturday afternoon March 5, 1932, at three o'clock at his home, 187 Park avenue, death resulting from a number of paralytic strokes which he suffered during the past five years. He was 81 years of age.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock at the Cobb-Phelps Funeral chapel in Spencer with Rev. H. E. Hutchinson, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal church, in charge. He was assisted by Rev. J. S. Schroder, pastor of the Baptist church. Mrs. Claude Pullen sang "Shall We Gather at the River," with Mrs. C.D. Eckerman at the piano. Interment was made at Riverside cemetery.

George Thomas Ellis was born at Rockford, Illinois, January 6, 1851. He was a son of Canadian parents William and Phoebe Ann Ellis, one of a family of seven children, five of whom preceded him in death.

At the age of 4 years, he came to Iowa and made his home at Clear Lake. When he became a young man, he located at Waterloo and worked with his brother in a barber shop.

November 29, 1877, he was united in marriage to Addie Clough at Cedar Falls, Iowa, and they resided at Waterloo for one year, moving to Redfield, South Dakota, in 1878 where they lived for almost two years. They later located at Milford, Iowa, for a short time and then moved to Spencer where they have made their home for over fifty years. Their first home in Spencer was located on West Second street. For the past eleven years they have lived at 187 East Park avenue. During the later years of his life, Mr. Ellis followed the carpenter trade.

On November 29, 1931, Mr. and Mrs. Ellis observed their fifty-fourth wedding anniversary.

Five years ago last July Mr. Ellis was afflicted with a stroke from which he never fully recovered. Last November he was stricken again and in falling from the chair in which he sat, in the kitchen of his home, he sustained head and abdominal injuries. On February 9, he suffered another stroke and was confined to his bed until death came quietly last Friday.

Four children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Ellis, Harry, Clarence, Myrtle (now Mrs. Clint Lighter of Moneta) and Thomas, who preceded his father in death in 1918. Besides his devoted wife who gave him every care during the long illness,he is survived by his three children, fifteen grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Out of town relatives who attended the funeral services were E. W. Roberts and son and C. W. Roberts of Scottsville, Kansas, Mrs. Henry Craven and children of Perry, Mr. and Mrs. William Reeves of Spirit Lake and Mr. and Mrs. H. W. Ellis of Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
