Funeral services for Fred Barkley Sparks, 72, of Greenville, will be Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at Grace United Methodist Church in Spencer. The Rev. Eugene Linn will officaite.

Mr Sparks died Monday, December 3, at the Spencer Municipal Hospital.

Burial will be at the Liberty Cemetery at Greenville.

Casker bearers will be Robert (Butch) Grund, Steve Hurst, Robert Gibson, Larry Feldotto, Verly(Tike)Gustoff and Stan Tripp. Honorary bearers will be Harley Feldotto, Weldon Pickering, Gene Swain, Arnold Olsen, Earlen Seaman, Royal Guerttman, Orton Hanson, Lee Holt, Elmer Steven and Roger Steely.

The Warner Funeral home of Spencer in charge of arrangements.

The son of Joseph and Anna Pearl (Beck)Sparks. Mr Sparks was born November 26, 1918, near Everett, Pennsylvania. His childhood years were spent in that community were he received his early education. He entered the military in 1941, serving with the U.S. Army until his discharge.

On September 11, 1942, Mr. Sparks married Clara Genevieve Barton in Winchester, Virginia. They lived in Everett until moving to Paullina in 1948. They moved to Spencer in 1952 and then to Greenville in 1955, where they made their home.

Mr Sparks began his career as an automotive technician at the age of 12, when he began serving and apprenticeship at Barkman Motors in Everett. After moving to Iowa, he worked for Tex Campion Ford in Spencer. He later worked for Lee Holt Motors for a number of years, retiring in January of 1983.

He was a member of the Greenville Congregational Church where he was serving on the church board and a member of the American Legion, Glen Pedersen Post #1, Mr Sparks served on the Advisory Board of Iowa Lakes Community College and had served a numbers of years as mayor of Greenville.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brother and three sisters.

Mr Sparks is survived by his wife; two sons and their wives, Russell and Joann of Primghar, and Dwight and Diane of Greenville; one daughter and her husband, Yvonne and Kent Zalanik of Greenville; 10 grandchildren; and one sister, Eunice Eileen Showalter of Everett, Pennsylvania

Interment in Liberty cemetery
