Isabella Watkin, was born in Dane County, Wisconsin, November 24, 1848. When she was two years of age, her parents went to California, by way of the Isthmus of Panama, and the two year old daughter was carried across the Isthmus in a basket, by the natives. She grew to womanhood in San Francisco, and there received her education. When eighteen years of age, the family removed to Rockford, Iowa, where she became acquainted with Milton Merrill, to whom she was married June 24, 1868, and last June, Mr.and Mrs. Merrill passed the golden anniversary, of their wedding.
They came to Cherokee County in 1879 and twenty-three years ago located in Clay county, where they resided until very recently, in the vacinity of Peterson, the last year or two, however, their home was near Dickens.
Five children were born to Mr.and Mrs. Merrill, one dying in infancy. The survivoring children who mourn with the father, are: W.H. Merrill, Sioux City; Mrs. Grace Hill, Sutherland; Robert M. Merrill, Los Angeles, California; Mrs. Eulalia Summerbell of Dickens.
Mrs. Merrill joined the Methodist Church, in 1872, after a bright conversation, and at the time of her death was a member of the Methodist Church of Peterson. Her death occurred at a Sioux City Hospital, Wednesday evening, June 11. She having entered the hospital, last March, for treatment.
The remains were brought to Peterson, Saturday morning, and funeral services were held in the Methodist Church, at 2 o'clock, that afternoon. In charge of Rev. M.D. Bush of Kingsley, her former pastor, who was assisted by Rev. W. L. Patterson.
Interment was made in beautiful Oakland Cemetery.
Mrs. Merrill, who was so well known in Peterson, and the surrounding community, will always be remembered as a loveable unsuming woman. Her going will be mourned by a large circle of friends.
