Michael Rote died at his home in Lincoln township Tuesday evening about 8 o'clock. He had been sick for several weeks but his case was not considered serious until last Thursday when it changed for the worse. Mr. Rote was one of the early settlers of Lincoln township and was held in high respect and esteem by his neighbors and friends. The funeral services will be held from the home Thursday morning at 10 o'clock, Rev. N.C. Harvey officiating.

--------------------

M.T. Rote was born in Clinton county, Pennsylvania, April 5, 1840, died June 28, 1897, at the age of 57 years, 2 months and 24 days. He moved to Wisconsin while a young man and was married to Miss Caroline Vanmeter September 14, 1862. He came to Lincoln township, Clay county, Iowa, about 1873 and bought a farm of the railroad company upon which he lived until his death. His wife died about twelve years ago while receiving medical treatment in Chicago, leaving him with three children all of whom survive him. Since the marriage of the two oldest children he has lived alone with his youngest daughter.

The funeral services were held on Friday at the home, conducted by Rev. N.C. Harvey. The universal respect for him as a man and neighbor was attested by the large train of carriages which accompanied his remains to their last resting place.

Mr. Rote filled his place well for a quarter of a centry and his quiet and matter-of-fact life is spoken of by his many friends as worthy of special mention. Thus the old land-marks and good deeds are left for our encouragement and their faults and failings to be forgotten.

He leaves a son, Jefferson Rote, now of North Dakota, and two daughters, Mrs. John Defrain and Miss Ally Rote, of Lincoln township, to mourn his loss.
