Rixte Koster Sonius, 1857-1922

Mrs. Rixte Sonius passed away Sunday evening, May 7, at 6:30 o'clock after an illness of several weeks due to leakage of the heart. Her death occurred at her home five miles northwest of town in Summit township. Funeral services were held this Wednesday afternoon at two o'clock at the house and at two-thirty at the Evangelical church at Fostoria. The services were conducted by Rev. Brouch.

Rixte Koster was born on November 6, 1857, at Ditzum, Germany, and made her home there until after her marriage to Mr. Hinrick J. Sonius. Mr. and Mrs. Sonius came to America in May, 1877, and located in Franklin county, Iowa, in May 1882. They lived there for a time and then moved to Lyon county, from there to O'Brien county and then to Clay county where they located on the farm in Summit township where Mrs. Sonius has lived for the past twenty-nine years. Mr. Sonius died on April 21, 1905.

Mrs. Sonius was the mother of fourteen children, Mrs. Siebt Hagemeyer of Clara City, Minn., Reinder Sonius, John Sonius, Harmon Sonius, Mrs. Rixte Croxton, Albert Sonius, Lena Sonius, George Sonius and Ella Sonius, all of Spencer and Mrs. Geznia Henrikson of Ft. Wayne, Ind., and Dirk Sonius of Linn Grove, Iowa. Three children preceded her in death, tow in infancy and Hinrick H. Sonius who was killed in action in France on October 13, 1918. Mrs. Sonius is also survived by eighteen grandchildren.
