MRS. HARRIETTE TUBBS DIED TUESDAY AT THE AGE OF EIGHTY-FOUR YEARS

Mrs. Harriette Tubbs, for the past forty years a highly respected resident of Clay county, passed away at her home north of Spencer on July 16, 1918, following a lingering illness of infirmities due to old age.

Harriette Josephine Steele was born at Watertown, New York, April 24, 1834, and passed away on Tuesday, of last week at the advanced age of 84 years, 2 months and 22 days.

In the spring of 1851 she was united in marriage to William Riley Tubbs at Watertown, N. Y. To them were born three daughters, Orissa A., who died several years ago; Hattie M. Henry, of Shenandoah and Martha F. Holden, of Spencer.

In 1860 Mr. and Mrs. Tubbs came west by the way of the lakes in a boat to Chicago, thence by rail to Manchester, Iowa, where they resided during the war. Her husband volunteered and entered the service of his country. After the war they lived four years at Colesburg, moving from there to Malvern, where they lived with the exception of one year at Beatrice, Nebraska, and two years in Kansas, until coming to Clay county forty years ago.

Thirty-six years ago they built the house just north of Spencer in which she lived until the time of her death, Mr. Tubbs having died sixteen years ago on August 24th.

Those who knew Mrs. Tubbs intimately believed she was designed by nature for what fate denied her. She was a cousin of Mariette Halley, better known toy her pen name, "Josiah Allen's Wife." Very early in life Mrs. Tubbs was converted and joined the M. E. church. She lived consistently and died in the triumph of a living faith.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 o'clock Friday afternoon, conducted by Rev. A. M. Leichliter in the yard of her late home, the casket being placed amid the flowers she had planted and tended with such care and which she so much loved. The body was laid to rest by the side of her husband in Riverside cemetery.
