JOE SCHWARTZER SUCCUMBS WHILE WORKING IN FIELD
Drops Dead off Seat of Blue Grass Stripping MachineEVERLY (Special)—Joe Schwartzer, 68, of Everly, dropped dead while driving a team on a blue grass stripper two miles west of town. Verle Maulnesen, driving another stripper immediately behind the one operated by Schwartzer, saw him drop backward in the seat, stiffening, his hat falling off.
Young Maulnesen called to his father, Peter Maulnesen, also working in the field. The elder Maulnesen stopped his team and rushed to Schwartzer's side, catching him before he fell from the seat.
Other workers in the field gathered. Believing Schwartzer had fainted, an attempt was made to revive him. Failing in this, he was rushed to Everly, where Dr. H. De Garzon pronounced him dead, giving heart attack as reason for the death. Dr. J. M. Sokol, county coroner confirmed Dr. DeGarzon's diagnosis.
Felt Dizzy
At noon Thursday, Schwartzer told his companions that he felt dizzy. A few hours later, shortly before his death, he remarked to Peter Maulnesen, "I am so dizzy I can hardly see to drive."
Funeral services were held Saturday morning at 9:30 o'clock from Sacred Heart church in Spencer, the Rev. Fr. Wendt officiating. Burial was in Riverside cemetery.
Mr. Schwartzer was born in Germany May 19, 1867. At the age of 14 years he came to the United States with his parents, settling in Minnesota. In 1896 he married Miss Lena Kuban of Clay County, and established a farm in the county. When Mrs. Schwartzer died April 12, 1931, he retired from the farm and since that time made his home in Everly with a brother-in-law, Carl Kuban.
Other survivors are two brothers-in-law, Robert and Richard Kuban, of Clay county, and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Mary Carrol, of Mason City.
