William Battin, aged 83 years and 18 days and a resident of Clay county since 1872, was killed at Redwood Falls, Minnesota, Monday, September 25th. Mr. Battin and his wife left Spencer that morning for Morton, Minnesota, where they expected to visit in the home of their son, W.F. Battin and family. On their way they stopped at Redwood Falls for a short visit with relatives and friends. Mr. Battin had been down town in an automobile and was returning to the home where he was visiting. As he stepped from the car and started to walk across the street he was struck by a passing car. The driver explained that the sun was shining on the windshield so as to make it impossible to see the street in front of him. Traffic was heavy at this time for a fair was in session in Redwood Falls and the city was crowded. Mr. Battin was taken to a hospital and everything possible done for him. The accident occurred late in the afternoon and he died at ten-fifty o'clock that night.

William Battin was born September 7, 1839, at Graysville, Ohio. He was married in Green county, Wisconsin, March 21, 1869, to Miss Lucy P. Van Matre. Mr. Battin saw service in the Civil war and at the close of the conflict he brought his family to Clay county, Iowa. The family home was for some time on section two, Clay township, and for the past few years Mr. and Mrs. Battin have made their home in Spencer.

Besides his wife he is survived by his two sons, L.A. Battin of Spencer and W.F. Battin of Morton, Minnesota. There are also several brothers and sisters surviving.

Mr. Battin was a member of the Christian church, having joined in 1896. He was also a member of the G.A.R.

The body was brought to Spencer and funeral services conducted Friday in charge of the Rev. W.F. Hurst, pastor of the Christian church. Interment was made in Riverside cemetery.
