THE LAST SUMMONS

Last Friday, shortly after noon, the soul of George V. Gage, an old and honored citizen of Spencer, passed to its reward. Mr. Gage took to his bed three years ago, and through all the weary intervening days and months, was a cheerful, patient sufferer. For months at a time there seemingly would be but little, if any, difference in his condition. Last Friday, shortly before noon, he began to fail rapidly and the end came quietly, peacefully, at 12:50 p.m. The funeral was held Monday at 10 a.m. at the home, Rev. O. M. Bond conducting the services, which were largely attended by neighbors and friends. Burial was in Riverside.

Deceased was born Nov. 9, 1823, at Whiting, Vermont. When 21 years of age he went to Syracuse, New York, to live. He was married Sept. 28, 1847, to Miss Philinda Morehouse, to which union two children—Isabel and Josephine,— were horn, both of whom preceded him to the better land. On April 30th, l867, he was united in marriage to Miss Jennie Edwards, who survives him. Mr. and Mrs. Gage came to Clay county in 1880, lived on a farm for several years, finally coming to Spencer to live.

Mr. Gage was a man of many fine qualities through which he won many friends, to whom he was most devoted and loyal, while his integrity was of the highest order. He was passionately fond of music, and so long as he was able to be out of bed spent much of his time at the piano playing for the pleasure of himself and friends. His life work, conscientiously and faithfully performed, is ended, and at a ripe old age he lays down his burden to enter upon that rest awaiting the faithful.
