Clay County Pioneer Passes Away

Carl Gustaf Freeburg was born in Sweden, May 26, 1849, and died at Augustan hospital in Chicago, whither he had gone for an operation, April 28, 1911, aged sixty-one years and eleven months.

He was married in Sweden to Miss Katherine Pearson on the twenty-sixth of June 1872. From this happy union were born eleven children all of whom are living and with the wife and mother are left to mourn their loss.

Mr. Freeburg arrived in this country from Sweden with his wife and four children April 25, 1880 and came direct to Clay county where he bought a farm, the present homestead, twelve miles southwest of Spencer. On this farm Mr. Freeburg and family have lived continuously for the past thirty-one years, and here also seven of the children were born and have grown to manhood and womanhood.

Mr. Freeburg was a progressive, industrious and prosperous farmer, he realized the fertility and increasing value of Clay county land and had added to his holdings from time to time until at the time of his death he owned about one and a half sections. But above all we are glad to say that he believed in religion and was himself an earnest Christian. He was one of the charter members of the Lutheran church and one of its most liberal supporters. He contributed liberally to home and foreign missions and to every worthy and benevolent object. He brought up a large family of industrious, honest and well behaved children all of whom are respected citizens of Clay county and an honor to their parents. Mr. Freeburg for many years and up to the time of his death has been superintendent of the Sunday school of the Lincoln Ev. Lutheran church and in that office was efficient, faithful and successful.

Four children are married and live on farms of their own around the parental homestead.

In the death of Mr. Freeburg this community has lost an honest and progressive citizen, the church a liberal and faithful member and the family a wise counselor, a devoted husband, and a kind father.

He leaves to mourn his loss, a wife, eleven children, twelve grandchildren, one sister, Mr.s Landbeck, and a large circle of friends who had learned to respect and esteem him.

The funeral was held at the Lincoln Ev. Lutheran church Sunday at two o'clock and was conducted by Rev. A.G. Englund, of Albert City. The remains were interred at the Lincoln cemetery.
