Lucy Chestelson, 91, of Oskaloosa, Iowa and formally of Cornell, Iowa, died Sunday, August 29, 2010 at the Northern Mahaska Nursing and Rehab Center. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, September 2, 2010 at the First Lutheran Church in Sioux Rapids, Iowa.
Burial will be in Garfield Township Cemetery in Webb, Iowa. A visitation will begin at 3 p.m., Wednesday at the First Lutheran Church. The family will be present from 5 -7 p.m. to greet visitors.
Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. Memorials may be made to the First Lutheran Church or St. John Lutheran Church.
Lucy Maryett Chestelson, daughter of Jason and Elizabeth Crouse Logan, was born February 2, 1919 in Spencer, Iowa. She was educated in Marathon, Iowa. She married Elmer Carl Chestelson, Sr. November 14, 1935. They made their home in Cornell, Iowa, where she lived for 71 years. After sixty years of marriage, Elmer died on December 20, 1995. Lucy moved to Oskaloosa in 2006 to be near her daughter. Lucy was baptized and was a life long member of the First Lutheran Church in Sioux Rapids and attended St. John Lutheran Church after moving to Oskaloosa. As a member of the First Lutheran Church she served as a mentor for confirmation groups and assisted the pastor in serving communion to the area shut-ins. She will be remembered as a faithful servant to the church. She was also a member of the Sioux Rapids Historical Society and the Jolly Elders Club. Lucy enjoyed crafts and knitting and spending time with her family.
Lucy’s family includes a daughter, Janet (Gary) Halverson of Oskaloosa and a son, Carl (Jean) Chestelson of San Dimas, CA; grandsons: Todd Halverson of Oskaloosa and Eric Chestelson of Laguna Hills, Calif.; a granddaughter, Ann (Jim) Strawn of Clive, Iowa; four great grandchildren: Zachary and Dillon Chestelson and Emily and Sam Strawn; a sister, Pauleen Davis of Kansas City, Kansas and a special niece, Pat (Bill) Eveland of Gardner, Kansas.
Besides her parents and her husband, Lucy was preceded in death by four sisters: Beulah Sassman, Myrtle Logan, Ida Trenary and an infant sister, Isabelle Logan.
