Ella M. Atkinson, the daughter of Herman Henry and Elvina Zinn Brinkert, was born February 6, 1907, in Primghar, Iowa. Her childhood years were spent in the Hartley, Iowa, area where she received her education. As a young girl, she worked at the Park Hotel in Hartley.
Ella married Floyd Atkinson on March 23, 1925, in Worthington, Minnesota. To this union one son was born, James Edward, on September 8, 1928. Throughout the early years of their married life, they lived in Peterson, Iowa, where her husband worked as a barber. They moved to Spencer and farmed from 1928 to 1960. In 1970, they moved into the town of Spencer. She was a member of First English Lutheran Church in Spencer where she was active in Ladies Aid and Church Circles. Ella was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Spencer. She especially enjoyed volunteering her time sewing at St. Luke Lutheran Home. Ella and Floyd were married 66 years and had been the longest married couple of the church at that time, and she was currently the oldest member of First English Lutheran Church.
Ella passed away at Longhouse Residence in Spencer on Friday, December 23, 2005, at the age of 98. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Floyd, on August 30, 1991; one son, James Edward, in 1964; two sisters: Rose Graen and Mae Bojens; and one brother, Edward Brinkert.
She is survived by one sister, Leona Zaiser, of Hartley, IA; one grandson, Kevin James (Atkinson) Mason; other relatives and friends.
