On Friday June 26 after a protracted illness of more than one year, C.I. Austin passed peacefully away surrounded by those members of his family who are living in the immediate vicinity. The death of Mr. Austin although expected for some time was a shock to both relatives and a large circle of friends. Being a man of no bad habits, and upright and honest in all his dealings he had won a reputation for honesty and integrity among the many friends and acquaintances with whom he had come in contact. He was of a pleasant and gentle disposition and one of his chief aims in life was to assist in the pleasures and enjoyment of his family.
C.I. Austin was born in Otsego Co., New York, Jan. 22, 1825, where he resided with his parents until 1843 when he moved to Illinois, settling near the present Woodstock. In 1883 he removed to Spencer, Iowa, where he resided until death. In 1853 he was married to Nancy J. Thichcock. To them were born six children one of whom died in infancy; Alice, Melvin, Ella, George and Frank together with the bereaved widow survive him.
The funeral was held Sunday from his late residence on East Ninth Street.
The family were all present except George, who was in Oklahoma and was unable to reach here in time.
