Gene L. Davis, son of Arden and Edna Kent Davis, was born Jan. 21, 1946 in Clarke County, Iowa and passed away Sept. 22, 1991, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines at the age of 45 years.

He attended school in Osceola and graduated from Clarke County High School in 1964.

He had a love of horses from childhood and spent many hours with his grandpa. Gene played Little League, basketball and football. As a teenager he was a charter member of Clarke County Junior Sheriff Posse.

Gene was known as "Spud" to his friends.

On March 24, 1972, he married Pam Curtis at Chariton. To this union two daughters were born, Michelle and Martha (Marty). The family made their home northwest of Chariton.

Gene worked for the Iowa Department of Transportation for 24 years. In 1988 he retired due to a heart attack. Gene was a member of Chariton City Police Reserves, a coach for girls softball, Murray Saddle Club and Iowa High School Rodeo Boosters. He also volunteered, helping Pam with her Girl Scout troups.

Gene was an avid sports fan, helping at ball games and track meets. As a family man, he became involved in horse shows and recently the Iowa High School Rodeo. The past weekend, due to Gene's dedication to the Iowa High School Rodeo Association, his daughter and 110 high school students throughout Iowa participated in a successful weekend at the Osceola Fair Grounds. He was very close to the kids.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, one niece and three very special aunts, Ruth, Irene and Georgie.

Surviving are his wife Pam; daughters Michelle and Martha of rural Chariton; parents Arden and Edna Davis; brother Ed and wife Jane of Osceola; in-laws Eldon and Margaret Curtis; three sisters-in-law and 10 nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Sept. 25, at the Fielding Funeral Home with the Rev. Paul Olson officiating, with music by Chad Mathis. Casketbearers were Lyle Chaney, Dean Chaney, Fred Hembery, Gary Hembery, Jim Baedke and Marvin Martin. Honorary bearers were Terry Buckalew, Don Whitler and Jim Swarthout.
