Frederic (Fred) Jordan Wood, DVM, son of Frederic O. Wood and Dorothy Jordan Wood was born December 3, 1934 in Emmetsburg, Iowa and passed away Friday, August 03, 2012 at Southern Hills Specialty Care in Osceola, Iowa at the age of 77 years.
Fred received his education in the Greenville Rossie Schools graduating in 1952.  He then attended Iowa State College graduating in the top 15 percent of his class with a degree in Veterinary Medicine.  While at Iowa State, Fred was a member of Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity, Phi Zeta National Veterinary Scholastic Fraternity and Alpha Zeta Delta Honorary Agricultural Fraternity and a lifetime member of the United Methodist Church.  Fred moved to Osceola to make his home in 1958, when he began his practice working with George Lewis.  This venture lasted nearly 18 years before founding Clarke Vet Clinic.
He was united in marriage to Barbara L. (Evans) Wood October 25, 1980 in LasVegas, Nevada.
In 1970, Fred received national honors for Outstanding Young Men of America.  Over the years, Fred was very involved with the Iowa Limousin Association hosting the first field day in Osceola when the Iowa Limousin Association was formed.  During this time, Fred also formed Bell-Wood Limousin.  He received a certificate of recognition from the Iowa Beef Breeds Council for being one of the members to start the Iowa Beef Expo, where he served as the Vet for the expo for many years.  In addition, Fred was selected Producer of The Year and in 2011, Fred was inducted into the Iowa Limousin Hall of Fame at the Iowa State Fair.
In 1988, Fred formed Hawkeye Ova Transplant at the Clarke Vet Clinic.  Throughout this venture, he traveled the United States doing embryo transfers and even spent 16 days in Japan teaching ET work.
Fred was also very involved in Osceola and served on the City Council, was a founding member of the Clarke County Development Corporation and was a member of the Osceola Water Board for over twenty-five years.  Fred received the Community Service Award and in 2011 and became a lifetime member of the Clarke County Development Corporation.
For Fred, working as a Vet in Osceola from 1958-2012 was his greatest love.  Helping all animals, big or small, meant everything to him.  The opening of the local animal shelter meant so much to Fred because he knew all of the dogs and cats had a greater potential to find a home. Regretfully, Fred retired early in 2012 due to health reasons and has missed his furry friends.
Fred will be remembered so well by Clarke County residents as someone who cared so compassionately for so many people’s pets and other animals and was a great supporter and promoter of the Clarke County Area.  He gave his time so willingly to make it better for those who live and work in Clarke County. He leaves us all with many thoughts and memories and will be sadly missed in our community.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents, daughter, Cynthia (Cindy) Rae Wood and son, Frederic (Rick) Ross Wood.
He leaves his family with many wonderful memories and is survived by his wife, Barbara L. Wood; daughter-in-law, Sara Wood (Howard Ruter) of Osceola; granddaughters, Jessica (John) Duffel and their daughter, Harper of Little Rock, AR;  Devin Wood of Osceola; Step-sons, Tim (Misty) Saylor of North Liberty and Jim (Kelly) Saylor of Tipton; step-grandchildren, Morgan, Robby, Summer, Shea, Aidan, and Reagan; sister, Marjorie (Max) Faulkner of Osceola; brother, David Wood of Dexter; brother-in-law, Bob (Bea) Evans of Osceola as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and a  host of friends.
